Garage Door Off the Track? Do This (and What NOT to Do)

A door that's jumped its track is one of the few garage door problems that's genuinely dangerous. The whole door is still loaded with spring tension, and a wrong move can bring it down hard. Here's how to handle it safely.

What NOT to do

• Don't force it open or closed. You'll bend the tracks, damage panels, and can injure yourself.
• Don't keep pressing the opener. It drags the door further off and can snap cables or burn out the motor.
• Don't park under it. Treat a partially-open off-track door as something that could fall.

What to do right now

1. Stop using the opener immediately.
2. Keep kids, pets and vehicles out from under the door.
3. If the door is open and you can safely reach the wall, pull the emergency release only if the door is fully down or safely supported.
4. Call a technician — this is a same-day fix for a pro.

What causes a door to come off track?

• A bumped door — backing into it is the #1 cause in the GTA.
• Broken or worn rollers that finally jump the rail.
• A snapped lift cable letting one side drop.
• Loose or misaligned track brackets from years of vibration.
• An obstruction (a stray object or ice) the door rode over.
